IBM Announces More Job Cuts: International Business Machines announced that up to 3,500 jobs will be cut from three Upstate New York plants as part of the company’s plan to eliminate 25,000 jobs around the world. Company officials said they hoped to minimize layoffs at the Poughkeepsie, Kingston and East Fishkill plants by offering early retirement incentives, severance pay, retraining and, in some cases, relocation to other U.S. plants. Low sales and improved efficiency were cited as the reasons for the cuts, which will be completed in the next several months.
