Bob Knight owes his 600th victory to the Indiana reserves and an uncharacteristic barrage of three-pointers.

The fifth-ranked Hoosiers got a season-high 21 points from Damon Bailey and 17 from Greg Graham on Wednesday night to beat No. 8 Iowa, 75-67, at Bloomington, Ind., for Knight’s milestone victory in the Big Ten opener for both schools.

Knight becomes the 15th coach to reach the 600-victory mark and joins North Carolina’s Dean Smith, Texas-El Paso’s Don Haskins, James Madison’s Lefty Driesell and Missouri’s Norm Stewart as the only active coaches who have won 600 games.

Knight, 52, youngest coach to win 600 games, would not talk to reporters because he claimed he had to prepare for a hunting trip today.

“Those of us in the profession almost as long as he has been appreciate the perseverance it takes to get that many ‘W’s’ and still remain relatively sane,” Iowa Coach Tom Davis said of Knight.

Knight, in his 28th season as a head coach, is 600-212, including 498-162 in 22 years at Indiana.

Indiana (12-2, 1-0) was behind by eight points in the first half before Knight brought Bailey and Graham off the bench. The two combined for 28 of the Hoosiers’ next 35 points as Indiana took control.

Bailey sank five three-pointers, Graham had one and Calbert Cheaney and Todd Leary, starters who finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, added one each as the Hoosiers hit a season-high 10 on 23 long-range shots.
