Mediators Want Serbian Leader at Bosnia Talks
International mediators moved Thursday to have Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, a key figure in the Yugoslav crisis, attend peace talks on Bosnia this weekend.
Fred Eckhard, spokesman for mediators Cyrus Vance and Lord Owen, said that the mediators are asking President Dobrica Cosic of the rump Yugoslavia if he would “consider it appropriate” to include Milosevic in his delegation.
Eckhard said that Vance and Owen, who saw both leaders in Belgrade on Wednesday to prepare for apparently make-or-break talks between the Bosnian communities in Geneva on Sunday, are sending a letter to Cosic on the issue.
“The idea is to have Milosevic more involved in the process,” the spokesman told a news briefing. “A year ago he played a broker role (in helping Vance negotiate the end of a war) between Yugoslavia and Croatia.
“Perhaps he can play that role again.”
