The city’s 10,000th AIDS death was reported Thursday, a dozen years after the epidemic broke out. Flags will fly at half-staff over City Hall on Friday in mourning.

The name of the latest to die was not disclosed.

“Today is a very sad day in San Francisco, now that we’ve reached a milestone of 10,000 deaths from AIDS,” Mayor Frank Jordan said.

“San Francisco is touched by AIDS like no other city in the nation. . . . We will not forget why we must continue the fight for prevention, treatment, education and compassion,” Jordan said.
