OJAI : Volunteers Needed for City Hall Garden

Share

Plans for a garden in Ojai that will incorporate the latest in composting and other conservation techniques will be discussed at the garden’s future site behind City Hall at 10 a.m. today.

Organizers seek volunteers to help design, build and maintain the community garden, said Lorraine Timmons, a resource recovery analyst for the county’s Solid Waste Management Department.

“We hope to use the garden as a tool to teach the community about organic gardening, composting, reducing yard waste and saving water,” Timmons said.

Ventura County and the city of Ojai received a $5,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for the experimental garden.

But projected costs related to purchasing portable bathrooms and making the site accessible to handicapped people threaten to drive costs up, Timmons said.

In addition to cash donations, Timmons said the garden needs plant material, soil amendments, lumber, cement, benches, irrigation equipment, a drinking fountain and labor.

The garden, scheduled to be completed by early summer, is modeled after several in Northern California and Washington state, said Timmons.

Ojai City Hall is at 415 S. Ventura St.
