Former Angel catcher Lance Parrish and pitcher Wally Ritchie will be going to spring training with the Dodgers, starting Feb. 18 in Vero Beach, Fla. Both agreed to minor league contracts.

Parrish, 36, batted .233 in 93 games last season while playing for the Angels and Seattle Mariners. He hit 12 home runs and drove in 32 runs. The eight-time All-Star will get a $600,000 contract if he makes the Dodgers’ major league roster.

Parrish is expected to back up Carlos Hernandez and Mike Piazza, who are competing for the starting catcher job formerly held by Mike Scioscia.

Scioscia, who was not offered arbitration by the Dodgers after he batted .221 with 24 runs batted in, is a free agent. He did not want to remain with the Dodgers as a backup.

Ritchie, 27, a left-hander, was 2-1 with a 3.00 earned-run average in 40 games for the Philadelphia Phillies last season. A four-year veteran, he has a 6-5 record, four saves and a 3.14 ERA in 177 2/3 innings.

“We are pleased that both Lance and Wally have accepted contracts with our organization, with the thought of competing for jobs on our ballclub this spring,” said Fred Claire, the team’s executive vice president.

“Lance gives us experience and depth at the catching position and Wally provides us depth in our bullpen.”
