More USC Assistants Are Hired : Football: Four are added to Robinson’s staff, including his son David and former Trojan Dennis Thurman.

Four more assistants have been added to the staff of USC Coach John Robinson, it was announced Friday.

The latest hires:

--Mike Nolan, son of former NFL coach Dick Nolan and an assistant to Dan Reeves of the Denver Broncos the last six seasons, will coach the linebackers and will be the Trojans’ defensive coordinator.

--Mike Barry, an assistant at Colorado the last six seasons and father of USC inside linebacker Joe Barry, will coach the offensive linemen.

--David Robinson, oldest son of the head coach and an assistant with six teams during his career, including College of the Desert in Palm Desert last season, will coach the tight ends.

--Dennis Thurman, a two-time All-American safety at USC under Robinson, a nine-year NFL veteran with the Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Cardinals and defensive coordinator for the Ohio Glory of the World Football League last spring, will coach the defensive backs.

It was reported earlier that Doug Smith, a former Ram center who worked as a volunteer coach for the Rams last season, had been hired to coach the defensive linemen and Mike Sanford had been retained from the staff of former coach Larry Smith. Sanford will continue to coach the wide receivers.

Also retained from Smith’s staff were graduate assistant coaches Ricky Hunley and Jeff Kearin, it was announced.

Robinson has not announced the hiring of assistants to coach the quarterbacks and running backs, and a second assistant to coach the linebackers.

The quarterbacks coach will also be the offensive coordinator.
