The NCAA put Middle Tennessee State’s basketball program on probation for two years and barred the Blue Raiders from postseason play this year.

The penalties were levied because of recruiting violations during 1987-90 and overlap five sanctions the university imposed upon itself after its own investigation.

The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions added a sixth sanction, taking Middle Tennessee State out of the 1993 NCAA basketball revenue pool. School officials said that will cost the school about $50,000.

Last fall, university officials said the school would voluntarily put itself on two years’ probation, would forgo postseason play after the 1992-93 season, limit itself to one coach making off-campus recruiting visits and cut its scholarships from 14 to 12 for 1992-93 and from 13 to 12 in 1993-94.

Violations included giving prospective recruits clothes, travel money, free enrollment and campus housing and meals. Other violations included gifts to players, recruits, their girlfriends and families; cash payments, bribes, trips to airports and free summer school for students not yet enrolled.
