COLLEGIATE TENNIS : Rain Forces Cancellation of Finals

The final rounds of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Palm Springs Riviera Resort were canceled because of rain Sunday.

In men’s singles, finalists Brian MacPhie of USC and Robert Devens of Stanford were named co-champions. MacPhie was the top-seeded player in the tournament and Devens was not seeded.

In women’s singles, finalists Laxmi Poruri of Stanford and Julie Exum of Duke were named co-champions. Poruri, the defending champion, was top-seeded and Exum was seeded second.

Poruri and Exum also are tied for second place in the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. fall rankings.

In men’s and women’s doubles, the semifinal and final rounds were canceled. The semifinals were held over from Saturday.

The tournament features eight men’s and eight women’s teams along with top-ranked individual players.

Prime Ticket planned to televise the men’s and women’s singles finals on a tape-delay basis on next Sunday. Instead, Prime Ticket will show the 1991 finals, when Mark Knowles of UCLA defeated Tony Bujan of Texas Christian and Poruri defeated Mamie Ceniza of UCLA.
