Insurer Ordered to Pay Quake Damages: Home Insurance Co., one of the nation’s largest commercial insurers, has been ordered by a jury to pay more than $23 million in earthquake-related damages to a San Francisco-based shipping company. Matson Navigation Co., responsible for most of Hawaii’s marine shipments, temporarily lost use of its wharf and 70-acre container yard in Oakland after the Oct. 17, 1989, Loma Prieta earthquake. Home Insurance refused payment for the repairs, saying Matson’s policy did not cover walkways and pavement. A San Mateo County jury, which found that New York City-based Home operated in bad faith, ordered the insurer to pay $11.25 million in punitive damages and $12.3 million for the repairs. Home Insurance declined comment.
