Assembly Approves Bid to Seek U.S. Accounting Center
Without debate, the Assembly on Monday unanimously approved an $11.5-million bid supported by Gov. Pete Wilson to try to obtain a federal accounting center at soon-to-be-closed Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino County.
Creation of the center would mean 4,000 jobs for the region that would partially offset the 11,000 jobs to be lost when the base closes next year. A 73-0 vote sent the bill, authored by Assemblyman Joe Baca (D-San Bernardino), to the Senate, which previously passed a similar measure.
The legislation would appropriate $10 million to train potential center employees and $1.5 million to upgrade base buildings.
State officials say the center would pump an estimated $134 million into the region’s economy. Twenty states are bidding for as many as six of the proposed federal accounting centers.
