BMW Will Let Workers Decide on Union: Car maker BMW will let workers at its new plant under construction in South Carolina decide if they want to join the United Auto Workers union. BMW executives had said last summer that the German firm “saw no need for a third party” to represent workers at the plant, which will start building cars in 1995. BMW says the factory will build about 60,000 cars a year and employ about 2,000 people by the end of the decade.
