LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Free Rides on Red Line Get Preliminary OK

Share

Los Angeles County transportation officials gave preliminary approval Wednesday for free rides aboard the city’s newest subway line between MacArthur Park and Union Station.

The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission’s Planning and Mobility Improvement Committee voted Wednesday for free fares on the Metro Red Line--whose first leg is scheduled to open Jan. 30--for the first two months of operation.

The LACTC board is expected to vote on the committee’s recommendation later this month.

“It’s a great introductory way for people to get to know the system and ride the system,” said Jacki Bacharach, chairwoman of the LACTC committee.

The program will cost $150,000 to $200,000 in lost revenue, said LACTC commissioner Nick Patsaouras who last month recommended a five-month free fare period but modified his proposal to two months.
