From Staff and Wire Reports

Two men trying to break a 140-year-old record for sailing from San Francisco to Boston were expected back in port today after their trimaran was damaged only 17 hours out of the Golden Gate.

Rich Wilson and Bill Biewenga reported that their 53-foot Great American II lost the front four feet off its port pontoon while fighting 55-knot winds and 15- to 25-foot waves. They were in no danger and planned to restart the attempt in about a week.
