Investigators Raid Southland Garment Plants: State and federal agents said they assessed about $400,000 in fines during three days of raids on more than 30 garment manufacturers in Southern California. Most of the fines were for alleged violations of minimum wage and overtime pay laws, but authorities also cited three violations of child labor law. In addition, authorities said they would ask the Los Angeles district attorney’s office to look into possible criminal charges against the owners of a Pasadena garment manufacturer. Authorities said that the plant’s owners may have required as many as six women employees, against their will, to live in the owners’ garage during their work weeks.
