LAKE LOS ANGELES : 1st Phase of Park to Open By Summer

The Lake Los Angeles Park Assn. expects to open the first phase of a long-awaited community park before summer.

After several years of delays, work began with a formal groundbreaking of the 100-acre park at 170th Street East and Avenue P on Tuesday. The site includes a portion of a former man-made lake area that has been dry since 1981.

Mike Brown, president of the park association, said that first-phase plans include a modular community center, with kitchen, restrooms and picnic tables, on one to three acres of grass. The completion of the park could take 15 or more years, Brown said.

The association received the land last month from Apple Valley developer Jim Tatum, who hopes to build an 18-acre shopping center nearby.
