Drop in Public-Sector Output Forecast: China’s public sector, long the mainstay of the Communist system, will produce only a quarter of the total industrial output by the end of the century, according to a government forecast in the Economic Daily newspaper. Public enterprise currently accounts for over half of all production, it said. The State Information Center, the forecasting arm of the State Planning Commission, said the public sector’s share of output will fall by two or three percentage points annually throughout the 1990s, according to the newspaper.
