BREA : Council May Choose New Board Member

Share

The City Council, meeting in special session today, will consider whether to appoint a new member to the Redevelopment Agency to replace Councilman Carrey J. Nelson, who resigned from the agency board this month.

The council will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the executive conference room on Level 3 of the Civic and Cultural Center.

Nelson resigned as an agency board member Jan. 7 to avoid what he called “possible conflict of interest” because he owns a piece of property 300 feet from the downtown redevelopment area.

During the past two years, he has abstained from voting on matters related to the downtown project.

In his letter of resignation to Mayor Burnie Dunlap, Nelson said it would be in the best interest of the city to have a full-time fifth member of the agency board.

In addition to Dunlap, the other members of the agency board are Mayor Pro Tem Glenn G. Parker and new council members Bev Perry and Kathryn E. Wiser.

City Atty. James L. Markman said last week that the council can choose to appoint a non-council member to the agency board or keep the seat vacant.

He said that the five members of the council usually also serve as members of the agency board.

“But some cities have chosen members of the public to sit as members of the agency,” Markman said.
