State Support for Colleges

Share

Wilson says it’s unfair for taxpayers without kids in state colleges to bear a heavier burden. C’mon. The man fails to see the forest for the trees. It’s a given in a democratic society that we all derive benefits from an enlightened, educated citizenry.

If one carries out the governor’s logic to a conclusion, then only taxpayers who: read books should pay taxes to support libraries; are handicapped should pay taxes to pay for the extra expenses they incur; are broke and poverty-stricken are obliged to pay taxes for those who are poor and disadvantaged; have had a fire should pay taxes to support firefighters and their firefighting equipment.

We pay taxes ostensibly for the betterment and welfare of everyone, including ourselves. That’s just the unselfish nature of the beast--and the beauty of it as well.
