Tijuana Aid

Share

As of Jan. 14, more than 200 tons of donations (canned foods, blankets, clothing, medicines and other supplies) have crossed the border, destined for Tijuana’s flood victims.

The assistance provided by the people of California has been impressive, not only because of its dimensions, but more importantly because of its multiethnic origin. Although the Mexican communities in California have been from the beginning at the forefront of the relief effort, the experience of the last few days has clearly shown that the assistance to the “Tijuanenses” in need has not been the exclusive concern of the Los Angeles Mexican population.

As an example, it is encouraging to know that one of the largest monetary pledges so far for the Tijuana victims has come from a group of Korean businessmen who live in Los Angeles. The broad-based support for the Tijuana victims represents a source of hope and optimism for a city often described as too divided along racial lines.
