NHL ROUNDUP : Jets Defeat Blackhawks to Extend Streak to 8

While the Kings trying to get back on track, the Winnipeg Jets are hoping they can stay on theirs.

The Jets, with two goals from defenseman Fredrik Olausson, improved their winning streak to eight games with a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night at Winnipeg. They remain one point behind the Kings for third place in the Smythe Division.

“It’s great to be on a streak but we’ve just got to keep our heads on straight and play the way we’re capable of playing,” left wing Keith Tkachuk said. “We can’t get too overconfident or it’ll hurt us.”

Teppo Numminen, Alexei Zhamnov and Temmu Selanne also scored for the Jets, who tied a team record with their seventh consecutive home victory. The winning streak is one short of the Jets’ all-time club record of nine, set in March of 1985.

Selanne, with his 39th goal, set a team record by scoring in his ninth consecutive game. Winnipeg defenseman Phil Housely extended his point streak to 14 games, four short of the Jets’ record held by Dale Hawerchuk.

Pittsburgh 5, Vancouver 2-- Kevin Stevens had two goals and an assist and Ken Wregget made 35 saves as the Penguins ended the Canucks’ franchise record 18-game, home unbeaten streak (16-0-2).

It was only Vancouver’s third defeat in its last 16 games overall (11-3-2).

Buffalo 3, Calgary 2--Russian Yuri Khmylev scored at 2:07 of overtime as the Sabres ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the Flames at Calgary.

Alexander Mogilny, who had entered the game tied for the NHL lead in goals with Vancouver’s Pavel Bure, scored twice for the Sabres. He has 43 goals in 40 games.

The Flames are winless in their last eight games (0-7-1).

N.Y. Rangers 2, Detroit 2--Corey Hirsch made 30 saves in his NHL debut and the Rangers ended a six-game losing streak at Detroit.

Detroit led, 2-1, early in the third period, but the Rangers’ Sheldon Kennedy took a pass from Bob Probert, and wristed a shot toward the net. Kevin Lowe dove to block the shot, and the puck appeared to tip off his skate and past Hirsch.

Toronto 5, St. Louis 1--Rookie goaltender Felix Potvin made 16 saves and Peter Zezel and Glenn Anderson each had a goal and an assist as the Maple Leafs won at St. Louis.

Boston 2, N.Y. Islanders 2--Tom Kurvers’ slapshot from the left circle at 10:45 of the third period gave the Islanders a tie at Uniondale, N.Y.

Quebec 5, Ottawa 2--Owen Nolan scored twice as the Nordiques beat the Senators at Ottawa.

The Nordiques had two power-play goals and held the Senators scoreless during seven power plays. s

Minnesota 4, Tampa Bay 2--Mark Tinordi’s goal at 10:27 of the second period gave the North Stars the victory at Tampa.

Tampa Bay has lost six consecutive games and 11 of its last 12.
