ROUNDUP : Orange Beats El Modena in Double Overtime, 71-70

David Neal made two free throws with 26 seconds left in the second overtime to help Orange to a 71-70 victory over El Modena in a Century League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Orange.

With the victory, Orange (9-9, 3-1 in league) moved into a first-place tie with El Modena (9-8, 3-1).

Neal’s free throws gave Orange a 71-68 lead and that three-point margin held until El Modena’s Mario Perez made a layup with four seconds left.

El Modena, which trailed by six entering the fourth quarter, rallied and tied the score on two free throws by Aaron Aguilera with 30 seconds left in regulation.

With 40 seconds left in the first overtime, Gil Gonzales, who scored 16 for Orange, tied the score at 67 with a three-pointer.

Pat Harris scored 21 and Neal had 16 for Orange. Aguilera had 23 points for El Modena.

In other Century league games:

Foothill 46, Canyon 44--Justin Bower made a 15-foot jumper with eight seconds left to give Foothill (7-12, 2-2) the victory. Foothill rallied after trailing by four points with less than a minute remaining. Jared Winger made a steal and a three-point basket with 19 seconds left to cut Canyon’s lead to one, 44-43. Then Bower, who scored a game-high 20 points, made a steal and after being fouled flagrantly, sunk a free throw. John Werhas had 16 points and Stephen Whelan 14 for Canyon (12-8, 2-2).

Santa Ana Valley 68, Villa Park 55--Anthony Porter scored 30 points to lead Santa Ana Valley (10-9, 2-2). Brian Robertson led Villa Park (1-3) with 16 points.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 53, Western 49--Kevin Deck had 17 points and Bill Eubanks 15 points to lead Valencia (9-6, 2-1). Frank Floyd of Western (2-1 in league) led all scorers with 21 points.

Magnolia 73, Savanna 58--Aaron Williams had 20 points and six rebounds for Magnolia (11-5, 3-0 ). Jermaine Moore led Savanna (6-13, 1-2) with 24 points.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 57, Century 44--Jim Faulkner had 25 points to lead Estancia (11-8, 4-0). Thomas Harmon had 15 points for Century (12-6, 1-3).

Trabuco Hills 71, Laguna Hills 52--Brett Poulos had 12 points and seven assists for fourth-ranked Trabuco Hills (16-4, 3-1).

Costa Mesa 63, Laguna Beach 54--Lam Luu scored 20 points for Costa Mesa (9-7, 1-3), which recorded only its second league victory in four years.

In the Garden Grove League:

Los Amigos 66, Pacifica 63--Jeff Martell scored 31 points, making seven three-pointers, for Los Amigos. John Surface scored 21 points for Pacifica (7-6, 3-3).

Kennedy 64, La Quinta 51--Paul Pappas scored 18 points and made seven steals and Jeff Cummins had 15 points for Kennedy (15-3, 6-0). Kevin Doane and Corey Samuels each scored 12 for La Quinta (5-10, 4-2).

Rancho Alamitos 81, Santiago 74--Ed Taylor had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead Rancho Alamitos (8-9, 4-2). Joe Nguyen had a game-high 25 points for Santiago (5-11, 1-5).

Garden Grove 61, Bolsa Grande 40--Ray Greene had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Garden Grove (9-7, 4-2).
