Richard Waring; Actor Created Role of Miner in ‘Corn Is Green’

Richard Waring, 82, who created the role of the Welsh coal miner Morgan Evans in Emlyn Williams’ production of “The Corn Is Green.” A native of England, he came to New York City in 1931 and appeared opposite Eve LeGallienne in “Romeo and Juliet” and “Camille” before starring with Ethel Barrymore in Williams’ play in 1940. Waring was scheduled to appear opposite Bette Davis in the film version of the play, about a maiden schoolteacher and her prize pupil, but entered the Army instead. He did appear with Davis in the film “Mr. Skeffington” in 1944 and was on the screen in “The Perfect Gentleman” in 1935. In New York City on Monday of what his family said was natural causes.
