Regarding Amei Wallach’s cover story about the arts under the Clinton Administration (“Culture Vulture-in-Chief,” Jan. 10):
Indeed, while some people may view the past Administration’s attitudes toward art as “a cultural jihad,” don’t look toward the incoming Administration as a salvation. Are our memories that short? Do we not remember exactly who is married to the new vice president? Tipper Gore stands just to the left of Jesse Helms in terms of high-visibility artistic criticism from Capitol Hill.
On second thought, maybe she’s closer to Dan Quayle than to Helms. After all, both Quayle and Tipper guised their bleatings under a common banner: family values.
