Tragedy of Tay Murder Lingers

Linda Tay (mother of slain Foothill High student Stuart Tay) struggled to hold back her tears and said, “It’s been raining and raining and raining for days. It’s like the heavens are crying for us. It sounds so trite, I know, but have you ever seen so much rain?” (“Tays Say They’re Still Numb at Loss of Son,” Jan. 14).

Mrs. Tay is right. God and the heavens are crying for the Tays and all of us in Southern California. Have we ever seen so many reasons for God to shed his tears on us?

In the last few years, Orange and Los Angeles counties have experienced a flood of disturbing human events that have wreaked more pain and sorrow than any natural disaster. The L.A. Riots. The Gulf War. The recession. Scandals and fraud in business and public office. Gangs. AIDS. The homeless. The abortion issue. The list seems endless.

And now our hope. Our youth. High school students in prison outfits on the front pages of our papers. Murder, gruesome and premeditated. Hate crimes. Why wouldn’t God be crying for us now?

Let us all pray for peace. Let us all learn to love one other. Let us not lose our hope. Let us pray and work together so that the heavens bring us a rainbow of peace and harmony.
