PLATFORM : Honor Academics

KIMBERLEE HYNES, West Coast editor of Seventeen magazine and a 1988 graduate of USC, commented on the emphasis some universities and colleges place on sports compared with academic achievement. She told The Times:

A university with instructors and students of a competitive caliber is often more recognized by its PAC-10 ranking and the stereotype of its students than its academic excellence.

This prioritization, spurred by the media as well as the public, strongly influences the way the university sees itself.

Many university sports heroes receive complete financial support as well as untold other perks for superior performance or even for just a promise to join a team. Many promising students with financial need often cannot afford to attend the university of their choice and are not given support from schools.
