Felix Potvin stopped 29 shots for his first NHL shutout as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4-0, Saturday night at Toronto.

The Maple Leafs turned in a solid defensive effort for the Montreal-born Potvin, who grew up a Quebec Nordique fan.

“This is a game I will always remember,” said Potvin, who switched his allegiance when Toronto drafted him in 1990. “This is special.”

The crowd of 15,720 gave Potvin and his teammates a standing ovation during the final minute of play. The last time Toronto shut out Montreal was in 1976.

“This was a win for Toronto, the community and the people,” veteran Mike Foligno said. “It was for bragging rights. On the way in tonight, everybody stopped me and said we have to beat Montreal.”

It was only the second time Montreal has been shut out this season.

Peter Zezel had a goal and an assist, and Mike Krushelnyski, Rob Pearson, and Mark Osborne also scored as Toronto won its second game in a row.

Maple Leaf Coach Pat Burns defeated Montreal for the second time in as many meetings since he left the Canadiens.
