MISSION VIEJO : Bids to Be Sought on Elementary School

Planned for more than 20 years, Bathgate Elementary School moved a little closer to becoming a reality last week.

Capistrano Unified School District trustees unanimously approved seeking bids for construction of the school, which will be next door to a city park on a six-acre parcel between Napoli Way and Felipe Road in central Mission Viejo.

Money for the school, designed for about 750 students, will come from the state and from tax monies generated by a special Mello-Roos district, officials said.

Although the school was included on the first Mission Viejo master plan more than 20 years ago, it wasn’t until 1989 that the school district bought the land, officials said. More recently, school and city officials have been working to develop an agreement to use part of the four-acre public park as a playground.

Officials expect to open the school in September, 1994. It would be the 23rd elementary school in the district.
