Track officials said world records set by Carl Lewis and Mike Powell at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo were in no danger of being withdrawn, despite claims in the London-based Sunday Times that the Tokyo track where the 100-meter dash and long jump marks were set did not conform to international rules.

Lewis was timed in 9.86 seconds in winning the sprint and Powell broke Bob Beamon’s 23-year-old long jump mark by leaping 29 feet 4 1/2 inches.
