NORTHRIDGE : CSUN Education School to Get Grant

Share

The School of Education at Cal State Northridge will receive a $125,000 grant to improve methods of teaching science and mathematics to aspiring and working teachers, campus officials said.

The grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation is to establish a teaching and research laboratory that will be used by about 500 education students and working teachers each year, officials said.

“With better teacher education, we will be able to inspire talented young minds to pursue science and mathematics,” said Carolyn Ellner, dean of the CSUN School of Education.

CSUN officials said the new lab--which will be housed in the school’s Education building now under construction--will help counter the downward trend in science and math skills among U.S. students by better preparing teachers in those fields.

The percentage of students enrolled in remedial math classes has increased from 13% in 1960 to 36% in 1982, according to the National Science Foundation.
