In connection with its Super Bowl XXVII community relations program, the NFL donated $1.5 million to help start a youth educational and recreational center in Compton on Monday.

The facility, called the NFL/Youth Educational Town (NFL/YET), will be financed jointly by the NFL, recording star Garth Brooks and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. The Watts-Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club will manage the center.

Proceeds from this week’s “NFL Experience” exhibit located near the Rose Bowl and Thursday’s ninth annual Super Bowl Charity Golf Classic at Brookside Country Club will be donated to the NFL/YET program. Brooks will donate the proceeds from his two sold-out concerts Friday at the Forum to the center.
