George Bush Leaves Office
In response to “Two Stars at Yale . . . “ by Keith Fitzgerald, Commentary, Jan. 20:
Although I did not vote for Clinton, I was impressed by his gracious nods to George Bush, both on election night and in his inaugural speech.
I am not sure what the point behind Fitzgerald’s column was, but in one paragraph he cites a very thoughtful note that President Bush wrote his mother upon the death of his father and, in the next, goes on to cite the reasons why he says, “I haven’t been able to forgive him for Willie Horton,” etc., ad nauseam.
Unlike Fitzgerald, both Bush and Clinton seem to be able to move through the transitional period without putting in gratuitous jabs. As for Bush’s “Somalian swan song,” we will have much to remember him for, from his days as a pilot to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
My guess is that Fitzgerald’s father would have been proud to have played with the President in college and pleased by his note.
