South Gate : Meeting’s Focus Will Be 14-Month Reservoir Project

Share

The city will have a public meeting at 6:30 tonight on a $5.2-million, 14-month project to build an underground reservoir at South Gate Park and restore four water wells shut down in 1985 because of contamination by the solvent PCE (perchloroethylene).

Work started Jan. 4, and the meeting is to inform residents about the project and the disruptions it will cause, Assistant City Engineer Raymond C. Pang said. The meeting will be in the Girls Clubhouse at the park, 4940 Southern Ave.

A 4-million-gallon reservoir, a treatment plant to remove contaminants from the water, a booster pump station and pipelines to distribute treated water will be built under a 140-space parking lot, which will be restored when the work is completed.

During construction, the parking lot will not be available to users of the park and an adjoining golf course. To minimize the impact of noise on nearby Tweedy Elementary School, the city will prohibit work between 7:50 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.

When the project is completed, the city will put the wells back into service. South Gate has been buying water from the Metropolitan Water District to compensate for the loss of local water.
