Ted Tollner, who has been credited with effectively tutoring quarterback Jim Everett, informed Coach Chuck Knox Wednesday that he has rejected an opportunity to become offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears to remain with the Rams.

Dave Wannstedt, the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator who was named to coach the Bears a week ago, had publicly expressed interest in Tollner during interviews this week in preparation for Super Bowl XXVII.

At the same time, the Bears sought and were granted permission from John Shaw, Ram executive vice president, to talk with Tollner.

“The rumors were true and I had the opportunity to go there, but I wanted to be here,” Tollner said. “I just made my decision and I called Chuck and Dave.”

Tollner will remain the Rams’ quarterback coach.

“Dave Wannstedt is a good man, and I think he will do a tremendous job,” Tollner said. “But I also feel that way about Chuck Knox and about what is going to happen here. This is where I want to be.”
