School Shooting and Gun Control

In response to “A Gun In Every Purse Is False Security,” by Ellen Goodman, Commentary, Jan. 15:
I agree, the story of Elizabeth Murray is tragic. We can only theorize what might have happened had she been armed. But jumping on the panic-driven “liberal bandwagon” and shouting about gun control won’t help others like Murray. Throughout history many civilizations have armed themselves to “deter” criminal activity. Some imposed harsh consequences upon those who committed crimes. Our society appears unable or unwilling to do either. Why protect ourselves when we can legislate ineffective laws that leave the crooks with the guns and what do we have? Maybe Goodman should read the latest crime statistics.
It doesn’t look like gun control is working very well. Maybe we should leave guns alone and start dealing with people.
