Iowa played like an entire team of Chris Streets.

The 11th-ranked Hawkeyes, playing their first game since Street’s death, overcame a 15-point deficit in the final 3:30 of regulation and beat Michigan State, 96-90, in overtime Thursday night in a Big Ten Conference game at East Lansing, Mich.

“(Street) would have been proud of this,” Iowa Coach Tom Davis said. “He would have loved it. He was the toughest tiger in the town.”

Street, a 6-foot-8 junior who was the team’s emotional leader, was killed Jan. 19 in a traffic accident in Iowa City.

The 11th-ranked Hawkeyes (13-3 overall, 2-2 in the Big Ten) postponed games with Northwestern and Penn State last week and hadn’t played since a 65-56 loss at Duke on Jan. 16.

“We were anxious to come out and play,” said Acie Earl, who had 27 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawkeyes. “We hadn’t played hard in a long time. This set us straight, emotionally.”

In tribute to Street, the Iowa players wore a black patch with Street’s initials and his No. 40 on the left shoulder strap of their uniforms.

Val Barnes, who scored 29 points, led the Hawkeyes’ comeback with three three-pointers, including one with 20 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the score, 76-76.

Michigan State (10-5, 2-4) went without a basket over the final 7:13 of regulation. Jon Zulauf had a chance to ice the game for the Spartans, but missed two free throws with 28 seconds remaining in regulation.

Earl started the overtime with a rebound basket after he missed a jump shot. The Hawkeyes quickly built an 85-78 lead and the Spartans never threatened.

UNLV (12-1, 5-1) has won 42 of its last 43 Big West regular-season games.

Nevada (7-8, 2-6) lost for the fourth time in five games. UNLV has beaten the Wolf Pack nine consecutive times and leads the series, 40-10.

No. 14 Purdue 83, Northwestern 73--Glenn Robinson scored 18 points and the Boilermakers gave Gene Keady his 300th coaching victory by defeating the Wildcats in a Big Ten game at Evanston, Ill.

A 10-0 run, including four points by Robinson, to close the first half put the Boilermakers (12-3, 3-3) ahead to stay, 46-37.

Purdue had a 73-59 lead that was sliced to eight points on a 6-0 surge by Northwestern (5-9, 0-5), but a three-point play with 3:14 left by Cuonzo Martin, who scored 17 points, finished the Wildcats.
