Oral Roberts Retiring as President of His University
Evangelist Oral Roberts announced Wednesday he is retiring as president of his multimillion-dollar university. His son Richard, 44, will take over his father’s position as president.
The elder Roberts, who was 75 on Sunday, founded Oral Roberts University 27 years ago.
Roberts, who announced his retirement in a chapel service on the Tulsa campus, cited no reason for stepping down. But he has suffered from heart problems and underwent surgery last month in California.
He will remain as a university chancellor and associate and will maintain an interest in his evangelistic empire.
The university, with its space-age design on a spectacular campus, did well in its early years but has been beset by financial problems. The school has been losing money and contributions have fallen severely, Roberts said.
