Thurgood Marshall, honored by the rich and powerful as a man who dedicated his life to helping the powerless, was buried Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Marshall was buried after a private service attended by his family and close friends.

He was remembered Thursday at his funeral as a tireless and courageous fighter for civil rights, both as an attorney and as the first black justice of the Supreme Court.

Marshall, who retired in 1991 after 24 years on the high court, died Sunday at age 84. Almost 19,000 people waited in line before filing past his coffin when it was placed on view at the court building Wednesday.
