WORLD IN BRIEF : GERMANY : U.S. Air Force Ends Berlin Airport Role

The U.S. Air Force closed its base in western Berlin where it once flew thousands of missions to save the city from starvation during the Berlin Airlift. The 7350th Air Base Group, which provided technical support during the 1948-49 airlift, formally ended its presence at the city’s Tempelhof Airport with a military ceremony. “Our job here is finished,” Maj. Gen. James Chambers told several hundred German and Allied guests.
