Indiana became the fifth No. 1 team this season, a far cry from the past two seasons when one team, first Nevada Las Vegas, then Duke, held the top spot from start to finish.

The Hoosiers (19-2) moved up one spot to replace Kansas (17-2), which held the No. 1 ranking for two weeks before losing to Cal State Long Beach, 64-49, at Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks dropped to No. 3.

Indiana hasn’t been No. 1 since the middle of the 1982-83 season, when the Hoosiers held the position for two weeks. Their only losses this season have been to Kansas, by five points, and Kentucky, by three.

In those two losses, Indiana missed 27 of 49 free throws. Since the loss to the Wildcats, Indiana has won eight consecutive Big Ten games, half on the road.

The Hoosiers were voted No. 1 by 51 of the 65 members of a nationwide panel of writers and broadcasters and had 1,610 points. Kentucky (15-1) had the other 14 first-place votes and 1,569 points in moving up two spots.
