One day after the beginning of arbitration hearings, the San Diego Padres lost big when center fielder Darrin Jackson was awarded a $2.1-million salary and right-hander Andy Benes won a $2.05-million contract. The only player to lose his case was Atlanta Brave second baseman Mark Lemke, who will have to play for $550,000 next season.

The Dodgers and second baseman Jody Reed avoided arbitration and agreed to a $2.5-million, one-year contract, while Kansas City Royal catcher Mike Macfarlane agreed to $1,175,000. The Braves signed catcher Damon Berryhill for $975,000, relief pitcher Kent Mercker for $712,500 and shortstop Jeff Blauser for $2 million.
