COMPTON : Middle School Libraries to Be Reopened in March

Share

Compton school officials said they hope to reopen middle school libraries next month by hiring part-time clerks.

The libraries were closed last fall as part of $4.9 million in district budget cuts. The cuts included making classroom teachers out of the district’s middle school librarians.

The new plan will cost an estimated $51,000. Part-time clerks will work about six hours a day and will receive some help from the transferred librarians, who will receive a stipend for the extra work. In addition, one librarian will travel from school to school to help with cataloguing books and buying materials.

Since the cuts were made, parents, employees and community leaders have criticized the district for not having a plan ready to maintain some library service.
