Located on the campus of Los Alamitos High School, this arts program is the only one of its kind in Orange County, offering advanced arts education, tuition-free, to talented high school students.

The classical dance department, directed by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Colleen O’Callaghan, offers classes in ballet, pointe, modern and ethnic dance.

The instrumental music department, directed by Daniel Hege, who is the assistant conductor of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, offers instrumental instruction as well as music theory and music history. Students may join the symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra or jazz band, or participate in the newly expanded piano program.

The musical theater department, directed by David Green, provides instruction in voice and acting. Advanced students may audition for one of two performing groups--The Kids Next Door or the Acting Repertory Company. The department plans to expand its program for 1993-94 with new programs in classical voice/opera and playwriting/screenwriting.

The technical theater department, under the direction of Greg Smith, in addition to providing training in technical theater and stagecraft, is planning a two-year intensive video production program that will begin in 1993-94.

The visual arts department, directed by professional graphic artist Nancy Melbourne, offers instruction in drawing, painting, illustration, typography, printmaking and art history, among a number of offerings.

Admission to any of OCHSA’s pre-professional fine arts departments is by audition or portfolio review. Applications are available and auditions will be conducted from March through May.
