Fluor Corp. has added another sizable environmental contract to its growing project list, the engineering firm announced Thursday. Fluor Daniel, its principal subsidiary, won a $45-million contract to bring a refinery in Wilmington in compliance with the U.S. Clean Air Act.

About half of the projects awarded to Fluor last year, worth $10.8 billion, are environmentally driven.

Ultramar Inc., a subsidiary of Wilmington-based Ultramar Corp., awarded Fluor Daniel the project, which involves constructing units designed to remove sulfur, benzene and other impurities from fuels.

Engineering for the project is already underway at Fluor Daniel’s Irvine offices. Construction is expected to begin this summer and is slated for completion late next year. Fluor Daniel built Ultramar’s original refinery in 1968.

Fluor Daniel also was awarded a county government contract to oversee the expansion of a jail in Angleton, Tex. It will provide construction management services at the Brazoria County Criminal Justice Center, where 920 beds will be added to the existing 236-bed facility. State-of-the-art security, electronic and video systems will be employed at the jail.

The project will cost $35 million, but Fluor would not disclose the value of its portion of the contract.

Angleton is about 35 miles south of Houston. Refurbishment and expansion of the jail is scheduled for completion in mid-1994.
