Wilson’s Call for Schools’ Self-Rule

Share

I take extreme offense with the suggestion made by Gov. Wilson (“Wilson Calls for Schools to Set Own Rules,” Jan. 29) that the unemployment scene in California be partially corrected by allowing former aerospace engineers and retired military personnel to become classroom teachers without returning to college and entering a teacher training program.

As a classroom teacher of 26 years, I hold advanced degrees in several content areas, as well as in teaching strategies and child development. I have kept current with trends and methods through conferences, classes and organizations on my own time during these years.

With all this education, I would never be so presumptuous as to expect to enter the engineering field without preparing myself in that discipline nor would I expect to enter the military without basic training.

It seems Wilson and his advisers believe that if a person once sat in a classroom, he/she is qualified to teach. Wrong, sir. Effectively trained teachers teach!
