They’re All Smiles at Wellesley College

If Clinton campaign strategists sometimes puzzled about the so-called “Hillary Factor,” officials at Wellesley College are jubilant about it.

Applications to the First Lady’s alma mater have swelled “phenomenally,” a Wellesley spokesperson said, up about 11% over last year.

No one can trace the flood of applications from around the world to the all-women’s college near Boston exclusively to the attention afforded to the best-known graduate of the class of 1969.

As Laurel Stavis of the Wellesley news office put it, “The application form doesn’t say, ‘Are you a Hillary Clinton wanna-be?’ ”

But the fact that the former Hillary Rodham is a Wellesley trustee who has often spoken of the significance of her undergraduate education can be seen only as a positive ingredient in the increased interest in the school, Stavis said.

Wellesley has about 2,200 students, and to date has received close to 3,000 applications, “our biggest pool ever.”
