Palestinian militants shot and killed one Israeli merchant and wounded another Tuesday in the occupied Gaza Strip, military officials said. They said the victims were riding together in a car.

“Armed terrorists attacked two vegetable merchants in the area of the seashore west of Khan Yunis. One of the merchants was killed on the spot. The second was lightly wounded,” an Israeli military official said.

The official said the dead man was a Jew from central Israel and the wounded man an Israeli Arab who managed to escape and call army forces to the scene.

She said the two had gone into an area declared off limits to Israelis by the army.

Security sources said the merchants had apparently gone to the area in search of produce to sell in Israel.

It was the second fatal attack on Israelis since the Jewish state deported 415 alleged Muslim activists to Lebanon in December after militants killed five soldiers.

Israeli forces have killed 10 Palestinians since Friday in a spurt of unrest that began when the army shot without warning at a car containing armed Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, killing three.
