Bill Honig’s Conviction

Share

It is a major tragedy that our children have to suffer from the governor’s shortsighted, drive-by political assassination of a caring and capable leader.

Honig has my deepest feelings of compassion on the loss of his duel with his boss. Unfortunately, genius and political combat experience are not always mutually inclusive. Pete Wilson is an experienced, political in-fighting bully. Honig is a serious professional educator, who probably never traded blows in mortal combat with anyone, much less the likes of Wilson. Honig’s only crime was not being savvy enough to avoid making himself a target.

Wilson’s political gain will be our educational loss. Honig was bringing positive change to an archaic and dysfunctional state system. It seems that the focus of educational administration has shifted from the minds and hearts of our children to the egos and images of our politicians.

I suggest that we completely depoliticize, and decentralize the entire educational system, and put it in the hands of concerned parents and teachers, on a school-by-school basis. The future of our children is too important to leave to a political hierarchy.
