BELIZE CITY : War on Drugs

Central American presidents will gather in the capital of Belize Friday for a three-day meeting meant to coordinate regional efforts to stop the flow of drugs. Participants will also study drug-rehabilitation programs for the growing number of substance abusers in Central America.

Because of their strategic location, Central American countries are often used by Colombian traffickers as bridges to Mexico and the United States. But increasingly, drugs are also being processed in certain countries, particularly Panama, where cocaine laboratories have been discovered, and in Guatemala and Belize, where there are extensive marijuana and poppy fields.

Observers from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Britain will also attend the conference.
