LOS ANGELES : Shots Fired at 3 RTD Officers; None Injured

Share

Three RTD police officers who had just gotten off the most heavily used--and crime-ridden--bus line in Southern California were fired on by a carload of youths driving along Vermont Avenue on Tuesday.

RTD Police Chief Sharon Papa said the drive-by shooting occurred at about 3 p.m. as the officers were being interviewed on the street by television reporters from KCBS Channel 2.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred at 46th Street and Vermont Avenue, Papa said. RTD police chased the car for several blocks, but by the time they pulled it over, the gunman had fled. The two people remaining in the car were arrested on suspicion of evading officers and having outstanding traffic warrants.

The officers are assigned to the 204 bus line, which runs along Vermont Avenue from 120th Street to Franklin Avenue. Carrying up to 65,000 riders a day, the line is the RTD’s busiest, and has for years ranked at or near the top of the line’s statistics for violent crimes, pickpocketing and graffiti.
